From the Greek hypo=back and leucon=white.
Large shiny green leaves with a heavy white back and pure white flowers.
A species from Japan known as the 'White-backed Hosta' because of the powdery white coating on the back of the leaves. In its natural habitat, it clings to rock cliffs in full sun, normally producing only one leaf per eye, but in cultivation it forms a more typical mound of large gray-green leaves with wavy edges. One of the most unusual of the species, probably of more interest to the collector or breeder than for landscape use. White flowers.
Very large shiny green leaves with pure-white reverse. Lavender flowers.
Large, shiny green leaves with a glaucous white backing, found growing on steep cliffs in Japan, lavendar flowers in August.
Glaucous olive-green, white undersides; heart to oval, slightly wavy margin.
